Welcome The Santa Susana Railroad Historical Society

Broadway limited NW2 Union Pacific:

EMC produced the NW2 in 1939 and built until 1948. These switchers were rated at 1000 horsepower and with a light weight Winton 201A power plant in a carbody built with visibility in mind. Union Pacific bought 96 of these switchers and came in black with “Road of the Challengers” on the side. The first unit to grace the yard was number 889 an EMC demo. More arrived on the scene through World War II. The units were first numbered D.S. 1000 – 1095, the DS would be dropped in later years. Five of these units survived until 1984 (1024, 1080,1086, 1092 and 1095) having a 44 year career!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

This is truly one of BLI finest hours, the units run great at slow speeds and look great. When I placed the engine on the track it starts up with all the sounds. The horn is very authentic and it makes for a great model.

ON THE TRACK:

As with most of BLI’s trains a solid performer, but programming need to be done on the main by using CV17. However, JMRI new version (1.7.3) does program these correctly. But, a booster is needed otherwise there is not enough voltage to program.

SOUND:
The sound is QSI sound and typical:
On a rating from 1-10

F5 – Air release Excellent 9
F6- Air blow off. Excellent 9
F7 - Brake squeal - 6
F8 - Mute. Excellent 9
F10 – ID when idle, when running speed in MPH. Excellent 10

THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY:
Mostly I would rate this very high up in comparison to other manufactures and recommend it for the serious model. I would give this my highest rateing!

Overall rating (1-10) 10
